Market Overview 

Banana selling prices in St. Petersburg were mainly. Banana sales in the Turkish market were also affected by the unfavourable exchange rate of the US dollar (1 USD = 2.06 TL) which made bananas more at around USD 12.85 per box CIF. Almost 1.5 million boxes were discharged and around same volumes are expected for the incoming week. Demand for both the green and yellow fruit was good however traders feared the large volumes shipped might put prices under pressure.

Banana selling prices in the Mediterranean ranged from around USD 10.0 per box CIF up to around USD 11.0-12.0 per box CIF according to volumes, brand and region. In the transit port of Mersin two vessels discharged almost half million boxes from Central America and traders expect over 550,000 boxes to be discharged by the end of the week or beginning of the next week. One vessel loaded bananas in Central America and one in Ecuador according to industry sources. Both the Free Zone and the Turkish internal market were oversupplied and cold storages were full.

There were large volumes of bananas from Central America with quality problems according to traders. The Turkish market was also affected by a ban from Russia on Turkish citrus which generated logistic problems and a collapse of prices for the citrus in the internal market which dragged down also prices of other fruit including bananas, as a result. expensive. Prices in the Mersin Free Zone were around USD 10.0 per box CIF mainly although traders offered at USD 11.0-11.50 per box CIF. The box of bananas was reexported at a prices of around USD 12.50 per box maximum.

Prices in Algeria were around USD 10.80 per box CIF and in Libya around USD 11.0-12.0 per box. Prices in Ukraine around USD 11.50 per box CIF and up to around USD 12.0 per box CIF with traders offering at around USD 13.0 per box CIF for fruit from Ecuador and around USD 12.0 per box for bananas from Central America, according to industry sources. Prices in the Ecuadorian spot market kept at around USD 6.0-6.50 per box (for the fruit only) during the week. No banana fixtures were put on record during the week but almost a half dozen vessels fixed potatoes from Northern Europe to Egypt and from Canada to Venezuela. One vessel fixed frozen fish for Nigeria.

There was shortage of ships of 250-300,000 cbft and rated are expected to go further up for that size ves- sels mainly employed in the citrus and potato trade. Hire for small and large vessel reached around USD 10,000 per day according to brokers. T/C for larger vessels was US cents 45-50 for larger vessels and around US cents 100-105 per cbft per month for smaller tonnage.
